My weekend at the Special Olympics State Summer Games

Being the hyperactive, never-sit-still-kind of guy that I am, I always need something to do. On days off work at Franco Public Relations Group, you can usually find me working on cars at my family’s tire shop or in the yard doing some landscaping, but you’ll never catch me sitting around. So when this guy, my college roommate at CMU and current copy editor for the Quicken Loans blog, suggested heading up to Mt. Pleasant to volunteer for the Special Olympics Michigan 2013 State Summer Games, I thought what better way to spend a couple of days off than to help make a difference with an organization I wholeheartedly support.

Franco’s own Daniel Stocking was eager to take a photo with two inspiring participants who competed against each other during my first game as a bocce ball official at the Special Olympics 2013 State Summer Games in Mt. Pleasant.

I volunteer because it feels good to make a difference in someone’s life, in this case, to brighten the day of the Special Olympic athletes, their families and fans. I never expected it would be the athletes who would make a difference in my life. During my two days officiating bocce ball games, I admired the competitiveness of the athletes who gave it their all in pursuit of the gold. But my most remarkable observation was that of the camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed at the games. Win or lose, you would always hear competitors offer ‘congratulations’ or ‘good luck’ to each other. The environment surrounding the Summer Games was completely uplifting and it struck me that we could all learn a thing or two from these outstanding athletes.

Franco’s Daniel Stocking and his former college roommate, Keith Guyot, volunteered recently and spent time with athletes of the Special Olympics State Summer Games.

I’m already looking forward to coming back next year! If you’re interested in learning more about Special Olympics of Michigan, visit www.somi.org. What are some of your favorite organizations to volunteer with?
