Yoga: A great stress reliever for the public relations professional

Careercast.com recently released its latest jobs survey, including the top 10 most and least stressful jobs. Public relations came in at number five under most stressful. This isn’t surprising. As a PR professional, I know that some days are very stressful and I need to be flexible. Jumping from a phone call to an e-mail and back to a phone call in a few minutes is challenging but can be done.  Finding stress relievers and learning to be flexible takes time, experience and practice.

Have you ever experienced an “Afternoon Meltdown?” Try yoga.

Right before the New Year I started practicing yoga again. It’s a great workout and awesome stress reliever, but getting to yoga class can create its own stress.   Yet, an article on detnews.com “For overall health, give yoga a try,” reminded me how yoga has impacted my life. Practicing yoga has taught me how to slow down, meditate and find balance in my life.

There are many different types of yoga and most studios allow you to try a free class or two to find the best fit.

Practicing yoga is not just reserved for the studio. The book “Office Yoga” by

Darrin Zeer, has great tips on how you can incorporate yoga into your daily office life. My favorite is Yoga breathing; slow inhales and exhales out of the nose help to relax. A few minutes of yoga breathing every day is beneficial to help relieve stress and lower blood pressure.

Franco’s own Joe Ferlito demonstrates Afternoon Meltdown.

Incorporating different yoga positions like neck rolls and arm stretches at work are easy to do and a wonderful reminder of the flexibility PR professionals need. In addition, my company Franco Public Relations Group provides yoga balls, in addition to desk chairs, so we can work on our core strength and flexibility while sitting at our desks.

As a PR professional I’m constantly working on improving my flexibility and learning to keep my stress level in check. I look forward to my next yoga class.

How do you handle stress in the office?

Namaste.

Reflections of a first year at Franco

My, how time flies! It’s hard to believe the year is already coming to an end. As I complete my first year as an official full-time employee, it seems like an appropriate moment to reflect upon the year.

The Franco family grew this year, adding several new faces to the mix. Our culture is truly unique. We’re a closely knit group of individuals that is as committed to working with each other as we are to our clients.

Just last month we celebrated the people and businesses that keep us busy daily. We hosted our second annual client appreciation event at Hard Rock Cafe Detroit with an evening of snacks, libations and heartfelt thanks to all the people who make our jobs so enjoyable.

Franco PR Group President Maria Leonhauser (center) greeted (left to right) Anil Hari, Sridhar Kodati, Krishna Kallakuri, Ravi Vallem and Venkat Goneduring of DataFactZ during the Client Appreciation event on Nov. 13.

It was great opportunity for everyone to meet and mingle with their clients, as well as meet other team members’ clients.

Earlier this month, the entire Franco staff joined together for a delicious champagne lunch, complete with decedent desserts at Joe Muer Seafood. The afternoon presented us with the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company away from the desk and celebrate the great culture we’ve developed in our office.

Happy Holidays from all of us at Franco Public Relations Group!

As this year comes to a close, best wishes in 2013 and happy holidays from all of us at Franco!

How are you celebrating the year’s successes?
