April Morton is a reporter and multimedia journalist for WDIV Local 4, where she contributes to Live in the D, covering local stories and topics relevant to the Metro Detroit community.
Can you tell us what types of stories, trends or issues are on your radar now?
We cover all lifestyle programing, entertainment, food, art, fun events, music, culture, travel, pop culture.
Describe the craziest or most fun story you have written.
I cover way too many fun stories to count, but the craziest would have to be during an Ontario promo, doing the CN Tower Edge Walk. Yep, I walked along the edge of the CN Tower in Toronto, one of the tallest buildings in the world.
What story or stories are you most proud of?
The stories I’m most proud of are those bringing something good to light. An example is covering the Living and Learning Enrichment Center in Northville, a place that helps secure employment for those living with autism.
What elements or characteristics do you look for in a story?
I’m always looking for unique story elements, something no one else is doing.
How long have you been in journalism and how did you get started?
I’ve been in journalism a total of about 15 years, most being behind to scenes, and I had a stint in radio as well.
Finish this sentence: If I am not reporting, I am …
Traveling and spending time with family.
What advice do you have for PR people that want to pitch you?
My advice for PR people is don’t send press releases on a Friday afternoon to those who don’t work the weekend (it’ll never be seen). Please include visual assets when pitching if possible. My biggest pet peeve is when PR reps don’t understand deadlines.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I love spending time with my husband, two teen kids and our dog. I also love roller skating when I can and traveling – most people don’t know I love to dance and wanted to be an MC Hammer backup dancer. 😊
